Which Platform is Right For You?

One of the questions we are asked the most is which platform should our clients target? In time all successful applications cover all platforms that are available, in order for their app to reach the largest possible audience, but we must all start somewhere.

In the UK just over 70% of the smartphone market is taken by the iPhone and the multiple Android devices, the latter being the stand out leaders with over 50% of all smartphones that are currently active. The rest of the competition is on shifting sands but we do strongly believe that the up and coming Windows 8 operating system will be swift to gain market share, and in time will become a strong contender for your initial platform of choice.

The right platform for you depends on your particular needs, the iPhone and iTunes eco-system is by far the strongest App Store on the market. It is also the sexiest and the coolest, and iPhone users are becoming as accustomed at searching for an app to reach content as they are using Google. Their users are much more likely to actually spend money to download an app or to make purchases. Each and every app on the Apple App Store has been stringently reviewed, ensuring it not only works, but also that it hasn't contravened any guidelines and is suitable for its target market, all of which provides fantastic peace of mind.

The Android based App Store; Google Play on the other hand is less stringent, and there is currently no review process meaning if you want to get your app to market fast, and to maintain regular updates of its content then Android works very well. There is also the obvious factor that you will have the potential of hitting over 50% of smartphone users with your app, and with it being the fastest growing mobile platform for the last six quarters this is set to increase. Android users are less likely to generate revenue for you through Google Play, but if your app is to drive them to you, your products and services off their device, then it can be ideal.
